Air Quality

Did you know...

Bleach is not effective in killing or suppressing mold growth. Spraying mold with bleach may actually cause mold to release spores. Even if mold spores could be killed, dead spores are still allergenic and toxins are not neutralized. The only effective way to deal with mold growth is to physically remove contaminated materials and to clean the remaining surfaces. Chlorine bleach lacks the ability to cut through dirt. In a study of five different household products to try to clean a moldy shower curtain, The Wall Street Journal reported that the least effective product was chlorine bleach.

What the best product to use to clean mold?

  • Soap and Water or any appropriate surfactant that effectively removes dirt
  • TSP (Tri-Sodium-Phosphate) found at Home Depot works well on walls.
  • Dr Bronner’s Peppermint Soap – peppermint is an anti-microbial
  • Vinegar
  • Borates have mold-inhibiting properties - 1 cup 20 Mule Team borax to 1 gallon water.

For more information about mold, click here. We are getting a lot questions from people regarding air filtration now that the windows are closed for the season. Questions about which air filter is best to help keep germs from people with colds from spreading and what reduces dust, allergens and mold indoors.

What does not work:

  • Ozone-generating air cleaners such as the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze for which class action law-suits are pending. Consumers Union tested these units “for their ability to remove dust, smoke, and pollen from the air” and found them to have poor performance. They are also harmful to our health. The EPA, in a document stating the agency’s position on “ozone generators that are sold as air cleaners,” lists harmful health consequences: “When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs.”
  • Ultra-violet light. There is not enough contact time between microorganisms and the UV lamps sold in air cleaners. The UV energy in these is not powerful enough to “kill” mold.
